1989 Austria Michael Haneke s first theatrical film Husband wife and their daughter From 1987 to 1989 the movie shows this family s ordinary life one day from each year Man has a good job at least it seems He has a jealous boss in 1987 Next year the boss was kicked out by the man In 1989 the man quits his job Wife does not seem to have a job She is a housewife She is surprised at her daughter s lying The daughter said she becomes blind which is not true Her and her mother argue about this She itches her belly during the class and it does not seem her belly is really itching On the third year the man sells his car and withdraws all the money from the bank To the bank teller he says his family goes to Australia the seventh continent which is not true The man and the woman destroy all the things in their home Table computer flower vase cups and even fishes and glasses They even tear up money they withdrew from the bank But they did not break! TV The parents give a poison shot their daughter to death The woman swallow bunch of sleeping pills And the man follows his family Haneke borrowed the main motive from what he read in paper What does threaten this family Debt which reporters guessed and Haneke declined this as proper answer because they are shits Haneke does not provide specific answer which he mentions in both commentaries in the Seventh Continent DVD and The time of the Wolf DVD We the viewers do not know what make the family to the limit In Funny Game it was immoral two boys who tortured and killed three family on vacation Still why is missing in even Funny Game and as if Haneke depends on metaphor why is more deeply missing in Seventh Continent We just can guess The thing is even though we do not have enough clue why the man and wife desperately and in more than any other motives and urges destroy their house familiar and ordinary life stuff I think Haneke asks are we real! ly safe Even though he clearly explains his movie and detail! s about why and what in movies his interviews give a lot of information about his movie s and one of major points he is trying to deliver in his worlds I think is the problems of western society In The Time of the Wolf she probelmatizes invisible our ordinary life s belief that our overflous material society does not come into sudden poverty In that sudden disaster can we survive Should we fight or give up just as suicide family in Seventh Continent There is Seventh Continent Australia And the man said the family goes to there yet they don t There is the Seventh Continent out there but not in the family s situation Haneke says he tries to show how material dominates our ordinary life In the morning it is not we feed ourselves but machines feed us His close up focuses on machines and routinzed procedure rather than characters vivid and should be life full actions I have to ask Why does the daughter have to lie To get attention from her parents To fan! cy her intuition something would happen to her It is weird response to ordinary routinized world Probably it is her to feel the urge to escape and evade the world society and rules I can smell a certain rules of Haneke s movies Seeminmgly peaceful rhythms but never stable and safe one It is not easy to endure visual destruction and violence without any specific reasons and explanation in the latter part of the movie The peacefulness and stableness in middle class family in the first half of the movie made me feel more uncomfortable and even chilling The most horrible danger comes without warning and it executes without justification The most striking moment is daughter s last prayer I think she already sensed her death by her beloved parents and whether because of her intuition or her just ordinary habit to pray before her sleeping she prays It was one of the saddest and the most tragic prayers I have ever seen Is western welfare society safe Are the p!
